Getting Started

Your First Weeks as a Sifututor Tutor

Practical guidance for running a great class, from your first session onward.

First class, step by step

BEFORE

Prepare and reach out

Text the parent or guardian right away to introduce yourself and confirm the subject you’ll be teaching. Prepare your teaching materials in advance: check whether the syllabus is in Malay, English, or bilingual, and match the latest exam format. Arrive on time and clock in at the scheduled time through the app.

DURING

Assess, then teach

Spend the first 30 minutes or so assessing the student’s current level before diving into new material. Clock out through the app once the session ends.

AFTER

Report and plan

Submit your Student Evaluation Report after the first class with a new student. Submit a Student Progress Report every 12 verified sessions, summarising their progress since the last report. Plan your next session’s date and time in the app so both you and the family get reminders.

Know your student

Active learners participate readily and ask questions, so give them plenty of exercises and hold them to a steady pace. Passive learners need more encouragement: ask questions actively, don’t hold them to unrealistic standards, and keep a close eye on their progress without discouraging them.

Teaching techniques that work

Fun learning

Games, storytelling, and role-play build a positive learning environment students look forward to.

Visual method

Mind maps, charts, and flashcards, especially effective for science and biology.

Audio method

Clear explanation with highlighted keywords, useful for students who don’t enjoy reading.

Kinesthetic method

Movement and hands-on notes help students retain and recall material.

Pacing a session

  • Pause for effect: give students a moment to absorb and connect ideas before moving on.
  • Use transitions: a short break, such as a song or a quick game, resets focus and keeps energy up.
  • Chunk your material: break topics into small, manageable pieces rather than long unbroken blocks.

Presenting yourself well

Neat, clean appearance and a confident, friendly manner go a long way in earning a family’s trust. Come prepared: know the student’s latest results, confirm the syllabus language, and check it matches what’s taught in school.

Building trust with parents

Parents evaluate you closely in the early sessions. Being upfront about your background, qualifications, and experience helps build confidence quickly. Stay professional: keep boundaries appropriate, stay current with the syllabus, and be punctual.

Why a lesson plan matters

A simple plan for each session (what you’ll cover, what outcome you expect, and how you’ll check understanding) keeps sessions on track and makes it easy to pick up where you left off next time, especially as you take on more students.
